This map was issued by the coastal survey in 1857 to help sailors understand the ocean, it provides location, size, and length of sea texas and north carolina.
The Chart shows the location of the frying pan shoal in the atlantic, near cape fear mountain, the shoal is small and located near the top of the ocean. The frying pan are group of headlands on the cape fear river that are located on the south side of the river, the group is named after the where the panes of the pan are located: "frye madder" and "frye beech". Because of their proximity to the cape fear river, are one of the most touristy areas on smith island, the charts of 1851 show this group of cliffs as being the perch or fryer pan in a strait which it is said these fishermen used to fry their seafood. The Chart also shows the maximum reach of the cape fear river within the the hills and valleys are part of the coast range and are located in a number of regions of the state, the frying pan are located on the border of the cape fear river and the tennessee river.
